Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu
Transfer from airport to your hotel. Pre-tour briefing with your tour leader. O/N Hotel Shanker or similar (4-star quasi-palatial hotel with garden and swimming pool, located in the expatriate enclave of Kathmandu’s Lazimpat)
Day 2: Early morning flight to Lukla, Trek to Phakding
(O/N Altitude 2,800m/2.5-3 hrs approx.).
An early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m), gateway to the region of the Sherpas. Start trekking north towards Phakding - meandering trails lined with stone walls. Lunch en route in the picturesque village of Thado-Koshi, high above the river of the same name. The imposing sister peaks of Kusum-Kangarru form the backdrop. O/N Yeti Mountain Home.
Day 3: To Namche Bazaar
(O/N Altitude 3,440m/ 6 hrs approx.)
Following the torrent of the Dudh Koshi, the trail climbs north through forests of rhododendron, magnolia and giant firs as it ascend to Namche Bazaar, the largest village in the Everest region and often called the ‘Sherpa Capital' of Khumbu. In the afternoon, explore the village of Namchhe. O/N Yeti Mountain Home.
Day 4: To Tashinga
(O/N Altitude 3,400m/5 hrs approx.)
Take the route, marked by well-laid stone steps, to the Everest View Hotel (at one time reputed to be the highest hotel in the world). Enjoy a cup of tea while taking in the splendid views of the Himalayas, including Everest. Descend to Khumjung and stop for lunch. Through a maze of narrow lanes, one reaches the oldest monastery in the Everest region. For a small donation, the resident monk will proudly show a Yeti skull - the authenticity of which is open to debate! - which is kept securely locked inside the monastery. Continue down to meet the trail coming descending from Namche. Soon divert from the main trail to reach the village of Tashinga. O/N Everest Summit Lodge.
Day 5: To Pangboche
(O/N Altitude 3,930m/ 4 hrs approx.)
Across the valley from the lodge, one can see the trail climbing diagonally up towards the famous monastery of Tengboche. Descend to the small hamlet of Phunki Tenga, beside the Dudh Kosi. From here we cross a bridge before beginning a steep ascent for about an hour and a half. This section of the trek is through rhododendron and pine forest, so it is well shaded and cool. From Tengboche, see magnificent views of Everest and surrounding. After visiting the monastery, relish the views and lunch at the famous Everest Bakery. Continue downhill to Deboche, to cross a bridge - this also marks the end of the tree-line. The trail then gradually ascends to the overnight stop at Pangboche. O/N Everest Summit Lodge.
Day 6: In Pangboche
Optional day hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,900m/ 5 hrs approx. return trip) OR, hike to the local monastery and Upper Pangboche village. O/N Everest Summit Lodge.
Day 7: Return to Namchhe
